Intarsia is a classic European art dating back to the 15th century. Initially it was called "Piatra Dura". It was used to make ornamental stone tiles for churches and palaces.
Intarsia's mosaic patterns of inlaid gemstones have been influenced by the intricate metal inlays and gemstone overlays predominantly found in middle Asian jewellery.
Today, one can get a lasting impression of colour and patterned inlays at the "Hermitage Museum" in Leningrad where vast rooms, inlayed with beautiful Malachite and Lapis Lazuli, can be admired. These patterned inlays form the basis for this art form.
This beautiful art form was introduced to the West through the depletion of raw materials in Asia and new stocks found in the American South West. By assimilating motifs and colours taken from the American South West landscape and mixing it with the traditional geometric patterns, beautiful pendants are created. They are set in gold filled, a classic style for today's woman.
